Josef Zirenner, Assistant University Professor
born 6 January 1915 in Mercydorf
 
Father: Lorenz Zirenner – teacher; mother:  Anna, neé Holz;
1921 – 1926 elementary school in Mercydorf;
1926 – 1933 attended “Banatia” secondary school in Temeschburg; was part
of the first graduating class of that school; subsequently studied a few
semesters of veterinary medicine and theology in Leipzig and Frankfurt
am Main; transferred to the University of Klausenburg, where he studied
German language and literature, philosophy and Greek;
1941 – 1944 after passing the State Exam he worked as a teacher at the
“Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn” secondary school in Arad;
1945 – 1948 he spent performing forced labour in the Soviet Union;
1948 – 1959 he spent working alternatively as school principal in
Sanktandres, supervisor of schools for Temesch district, and professor
of German at the German Pedagogical Institute of Temeschburg/Timisoara;
1959 – 1969 he lectured in German Literature at the University of
Temeschburg/Timisoara;
1969 – 1975 he headed the “German” section at the Institute for
Continuing Education of Teaching Staff in Temeschburg;
1972 he retired and has been living for several years in
Homburg-Schwarzenbach.
