How did you learn about the DVHH site?: Internet Surfing/Searching

Comments/suggestions about the Project: I'm impressed by the effort and enthusiasm.

Surnames you are researching: Schneider, Bender, Zimmermann, Brandt

Villages of interest to you: Elek, Almaskamaras, St. Anna, Arad

Comments: I'm fortunate to know quite a lot about my family history, both in Elek and in our original home town of Amrichshausen.  The latter is located in what is today Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany in an area called the Hohenloherland, which is about an hour and a half northeast of Stuttgart.  The local dialect sounds very similar to that of the Elekers, which itself is a mixture of Frankish and Swabian.  I was very pleased to be able to take part in this year's (2006) Weltfreundschaftstreffen der Eleker (world reunion of Elekers) and get to know several distant relatives.  This was my fourth trip to Elek and I feel like a know the area pretty well by now.  I've been in contact with Matt Tremmel, who has been doing his own genealogical research on the Tremmel family.  It turns out that both of our grandmothers were from Almaskamaras and married men from Elek.  Almas (shortened form) was actually settled by several families from Elek, so everyone in the two towns is somehow related.  I should mention that I grew up near Stuttgart and, consequently, speak German fluently.  This has been a tremendous help in getting information and being able to read it in its original German.

We would be interested to know as well if there is an English translation of the book. There was an updated version and forward by Michael Gross in 1980 but was also in German.

Comments: My father's family immigrated to Mansfield, Ohio from the Banat.  Many of them came from Setschan and I have found the excellent web site of the Setschan.  The Vogel side of the family came from Kreuzstatten and Wiesenheit.  I have not been able to find out much about the people from those small villages.  Are there any family lists for them?

How did you learn about the DVHH site?: Internet search

Comments/suggestions about the Project: I think it is great

Surnames you are researching: Kieffer, Shandor

Villages of interest to you:

Comments: On a 1920 Census, my great grandparents were listed as from Serbia.  I don't have much information on them. Great grandmother's maiden name was Kieffer. She was called Lena (or Lina). Other names could have been Carline or Caroline, and Elizabeth. She was born around 1860. My great grandfather was Hungarian, Shandor (not sure of spelling) was his last name, first name John. He was born around 1858. He had been married previously and had at least one child from his marriage, a daughter named Rose. Rose was born before 1892. They possibly immigrated to the United States @ 1892. If anyone could give me any help in this matter it would be appreciated.
Thank you.

How did you learn about the DVHH site?: searching the net

Comments/suggestions about the Project: Its wonderful

Surnames you are researching: Horvath, Anisics, Gubanyi

Villages of interest to you: Bacsalmas, Bajmok

Comments: I have been researching my family history for just over a year now. This site has been an invaluable tool in that search. I have found cousins from my Anisics side of the family that still live in Bajmok as farmers. Unfortunately, I have yet to find any Horvaths that I am related to. I do not believe that any of my Horvath relatives left the area beside my great grandfather Janos. I hope to make more connections in 2006.
