Saturday, September 3, 2005, a beautiful day.
Was very glad to get away from the hotel. I went to the cemetery in Mehala alone and took my
time browsing the headstones and actually began
drawing a map of the sections. There was
a local stone cutter busy at one grave that appeared
to be already existing and perhaps he was sanding it
down for a new name to be inscribed. Yes
it is true, I learned they do take out the bones of
dead people and place a newly deceased person in it,
if there is no one who pays the upkeep.
I met
the the current grounds keeper Eusebiu Avram, a nice
man who spoke a little English and understood me
well. After helping look for certain names in
the cemetery, he invited me in his house to see his
computer program where he is learning English.
He was very interested in what we are doing here in
America and particularly regarding Mehala. I
showed him the Mehala web sites, he called his wife
in to see them also. Mr. Avram gave me his
contact information and I will be in touch with him
periodically.

After
a couple of hours in the cemetery, I decided to walk
the streets of Mehala where my Grandmother, her
parents and siblings lived before immigrating to
America. I visited Mehala in 2004 but I didn't
take the time to actually walk the streets and get a
feel for the place. Come with me on a
A Walk Around Mehala.
