Remembering Our Danube Swabian Friends

Often we make genealogical acquaintances on mailing list, whom we become friends with.  What if one day, we just never hear from them again?  And we learn they are no longer with us. We should remember our fellow researchers and those who have contributed to the Danube Swabian Community.  Here we honor them . . .

Bill was a very nice man, always cheerful and helpful.  He passed away at the age of 80.  He sure maneuvered the computer well for his age!  His wife Rose Ann has fond memories of Bill.  She shared with me that he was a talented man, among her favorites, he was a carpenter, photographer, made vases and one of his last accomplishments was to leave behind a family tree which he had researched and constructed.  Rose Ann lost her best friend, but she knows he is no longer in pain and suffering.   No one in Bill's family, has picked up where Bill left off working on the family tree.

Long after Bill is gone, his footprints are still among us, Html Gear - Guest Gear View Guestbook - he comments "I believe in Angels"

I still have a copy of a message from Bill sent to me, dated March 2001, he loved helping people......

  A long time Banater Researcher......

After several email attempts and no reply, I began calling his telephone numbers from time to time. I finally reached his wife on 20 Apr 2004, she told me the sad news.  He had died last October.

Mike was a man who always reached out to help others. Many from the Banat list may recall his posting "I want to send a computer to Romania":
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/B/BANAT+2002+43029449431+F
this was a typical act of kindness he would do.

FrontPage Tutorial for DVHH Village Coordinators - Welcome to the FrontPage Tutorial for DVHH Village Coordinators. This tutorial, written by Mike Miller, is designed to give to a high-level introduction to using Front Page 2000 and later to help the Village Coordinator create and maintain village web sites.

Mike wrote the "FrontPage Tutorial for DVHH Coordinators"
http://home.bellsouth.net/p/pwp-connextech which is also a part of our VC tools section. This tutorial took Mike a while to put together and I hope he knew how much it was appreciated.  When I look at this and think of all the time he put into this, it makes me sad.

Mike lived in the Atlanta area, as I do and although we talked on the phone many times about getting together with our families and making sausage, it just never happened. I wish now we had made time.

Sorry for getting boo hooie, but I am sad he is gone. We have lost a truly nice guy, who cared about others and contributed to the Donauschwaben community. Mike will be missed by many, including his wife, 3 daughters and a son.

Subject: [BANAT-L] Donauschwaben Organizations in decline?
Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002

Greetings to the list:

It comes as no surprise to me that the various Donauschwaben organizations, especially those in North America, are in decline, if not already abandoned. In my view, "Assimilation" has a tendency to just simply "creep-in" and our "past family circumstances", whatever it is, is quickly forgotten and replaced by our own "personal current circumstances."  As a 2nd generation American and self appointed "family historian," I am constantly trying to keep my family's "heritage alive." And to "loosely" paraphrase Alex Leeb ... "Lest we forget" - I think that it is very important that my children know who they are, where they came from, and our family's history (as best as I can relate to them).  I hope that they can learn more from me/us (the list) about where our various villages are located, what daily life was like, and the sacrifices that our ancestors made to ensure a better quality of life for all of us that followed them. Actually, this is more like a personal goal for me!, but I'm not sure that I can fulfill during my lifetime ... but I'm going to give it one heck of of a try.

Regards,

Mike Miller

From the DVHH mail list members: Eve, you have shared with us so many little snippets of the life he and your mother shared and the rich culture passed on to you, we almost feel as if we knew him ourselves.

d. 11 Nov 1997

Maria Abt of the Milwaukee Club, the mother of Joe & Rose Abt of the (Cincinnati Club) & Hermine Linz (DVHH Slavonia Village Coordinator for Keschinzi & Semelzi).

My father Johann (Hans) Abt passed away 10 years ago today.  He was born on September 25th, 1927 in Semelzi, Croatia; married Maria Hoffmann in Lager Haid, Austria on September 9th, 1951. Hans immigrated to the United States in August of 1955, where he settled his family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I was their only child born in Austria, they had 5 more children after moving to the US; Josef, John, Maria, Stefan and Heidi.  My father was a member of the Milwaukee Donauschwaben for many years.  Some of the list members may have met him and remember him.

He was a wonderful father and grandfather, and we all miss him.  But he left us with many good memories; one of my favorite is of him in his white apron and cap roasting spanferkel.  He loved to do this, whether it was at home, at the club, or at Germanfest.  My brothers still carry on that tradition, Joe with the Cincinnati DS club, and Hansi and Stefi for family and friends in Milwaukee.  He made and smoked Hungarian bratwurst which he generously shared with everyone that asked, the recipe remains in our family and my three brothers have made sausage making an annual event.

So if you are pouring yourself a stampfel of schnaps today (as was his
custom), make a toast to my dad.  My children and I certainly will when we get together later today to celebrate the life of our Tati and Ota.

Prost,
Hermine "Hermi" M. Linz, AR - USA

Barbara was born in Gabos, lived in Vodjinci, Yugoslavia, then in Garsten, Upper Austria. Immigrated to the USA, January of 1952 and lived in Coloma, Michigan.  Her family is traced through 1841 in Neu Futok and Herzeg Falva, Austria/Hungary.  She had spent her young years in Yugoslavia, that she referred to as beautiful Upper Austria and at age 14 began her new life in the USA.

Barbara was one of the first DVHH village coordinators.  She was very helpful to all researchers and was a delightful lady to correspond with.  Barbara was very active on the Banat mail list in previous years before joining the DVHH.
