The Heimattag "Homeland Day" & Why Ulm?

In the 18th century, Germans left Ulm, aboard small barges typical of Ulm called "Ulmer Schachtel" (box of Ulm) and sailed the Danube to Vienna, where they registered for their land in southeast Europe.DS Descendants after World War II were banished from their homelands and fate returned them back to the country of their forefathers.

This event is held every other year in Ulm, Germany.  Some individual villages have their own reunion between the Ulmer Treffen meetings.

This meeting occurs on Pentecost weekend in even-numbered years in Ulm, Germany.  Thousands of Banaters attended the meetings at the Donauhalle. It is no accident that Ulm was chosen as the site of this meeting since it was on the shores of the Donau at Ulm that their forefathers built the rafts and barges used to float down the river on their way to the Banat.

Leaving the Danube banks

Walking back through the alley way towards the pedestrian walk, you can see the architecture of this particular building which catches the eye. The artistry and details are absolutely impressive.  Below is a close-up of the Muriel painted on one of the buildings.
